Mirror of Memory
—
A project with the Rijksmuseum and the Allard Pierson Museum, Amsterdam
—
This ambitious project aimed to place contemporary writing on art history within the visual framework of a past century. “Mirror of Memory” was about traveling, travel photography, and understanding the ‘outsider’ point of view through the framing and techniques employed in photography. The catalogue reflected these aspects by seeking inspiration from 19th Century travel guides, as well as using typographic styles and elements from the era. The principle of fold–out maps, evident in many travel guides, were used to display the photographs to be republished in the catalogue. In this way, readers could pull out large, impressive, photographs from the small booklet.
The commission also involved an invitation and promotional poster.
