We're Civilized

Autonomous work / Interview

I was very intrigued by an individual I would pass on the streets from time to time named Jens Schildt from Sweden. Fascinated by our sudden ‘meeting of worlds’, this small piece sprung from the byline: “Meeting Jens was a symbolic gesture of peace. If we met in the year 500, we may have killed each other. Instead we met in 2004, and I told him that I liked his pants.” The booklet is a typed transcript of my interview with him exploring the themes of history, nationhood, and the body. The photographs were commissioned by Marianne Vierø (DK) and Tania Theodorou (GR).

The design concept rests on the idea to simply present material in the form closest to which the activity occurred. In this example, restraint and clarity in the design lead to a greater focus on the conversations. There are few things more beautiful than a simple folded and stapled booklet: the form is very accessible, making it easy for viewers to simply pick it up and read.
