Identity for Vostok

Autonomous Work

Vostok, Antarctica, is the coldest place on earth measuring –89 Celcius (–129 Fahrenheit) during the peak winter low. I noticed that Vostok had nothing of a tourism campaign or even a logo, which was surprising since it holds a significant position in our world.

I present a photograph to be used in future publicity for Vostok. We are aware that the act of photography freezes a moment; yet, in this photograph the frozen object was exaggerated, extending it to a larger scale. Since Vostok is in an exaggerated frozen state, we thought that this process would be fitting. Snowflakes were carefully created from paper and suspended in front of a snowy backdrop. The photograph was created in collaboration with Eva–Fiore Kovacovsky (CH).

The promotional poster is rather austere and blunt, emphasizing that Vostok does not need to prove itself with the seductive tricks of a standard tourism campaign: it speaks for itself. I also offer two logo proposals for Vostok, which embed the typography within a glacial pattern.
